The Prophesied Job of Messiah

The Prince/Sovereign, The High Priest, My Servant David, Raised Up Shepherd, Son

Yahusha/Jesus is the Messiah/Christ. The Hebrew word Messiah literally means ‘anointed’ the word can be found in Leviticus 4:3 referring to the priest that is anointed. We can find throughout the scriptures that a person can be anointed as a prophet, priest, king, etc. and inanimate objects can be anointed in order to be set-apart or holy. The point of anointing is to be set-apart for a particular job.

So, what is the job of the One we call anointed? And who is He anointed by to do that job? We will look at a wide variety of scriptures, each connecting to another. Please, grab your bible and study along!

  • Psalm 110:1-4  The Lord said to my Lord (YHWH said to my Master), “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The LORD sends Your mighty scepter out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! Your people volunteer in the day of Your might. In the splendors of holiness! From the womb, from the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. The LORD has sworn And does not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

We have two people, the Father is speaking to the Son declaring: 1) The Son will have a seat at the right hand of the Father which is an idiom for a place of authority. This authority will be used to defeat all enemies as well as to rule the people as a King. 2) The Son is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. The order of Melchizedek differs from the Levitical priesthood because it does not require a particular lineage, or line of succession, as Hebrews 7 explains is “without mother, without father,” it is a priesthood given to the most righteous leader. (More in this in a moment).

Here are some places where we see these thoughts of authority repeated:

  • 1 Corinthians 15:23-28 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is the exception. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

  • Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”?

  • Hebrews 10:12-13 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of the Father, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.

  • Hebrews 7:15-17 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. For He testifies: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

  • Testament of Levi 8:14-15 And the third (priesthood) shall be called by a new name, because a king shall arise in Judah, and shall establish a new priesthood, after the fashion of the Gentiles. And His presence is beloved, as a prophet of the Most High, of the seed of Abraham our father.

  • Jeremiah 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE MASTER OF OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

The Melchizedek

Melchizedek means ‘king of righteousness’. Before the Levitical priesthood was established, the most righteous leader was given the position of priest. Abraham paid tithes to the Melchizedek in Genesis 14, and the Testament of Levi explains that Abraham himself became a priest, then Isaac, both of whom taught Levi the ordinances and sacrifices after the angel ordained him to carry the priesthood from that point onward. Again, this order of priesthood does not require succession as Levi's descendants did. The Melchizedek Priest was expected to be a King among the people and hold the responsibility of ministering before YHWH.

There is a beautiful prophecy tucked away in Zechariah about the High Priest Yehoshua/Joshua being a foreshadow of Yah's servant …

  • Zechariah 3:8-9 Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.

  • Zechariah 6:12-13 Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, And He shall build the temple of the Lord; Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord. He shall bear the glory, And shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on His throne, And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

*Also see Zechariah 12:10

The Branch

The term “the Branch” is used as a description for restoration. The One called the Branch is the One who is anointed to restore the whole house of Israel with a strong, righteous arm of rulership.

  • Jeremiah 33:15-16 In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David A Branch of righteousness; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

  • Jeremiah 23:5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.

  • Jeremiah 30:8-9 For it shall come to pass in that day,’ Says the LORD of hosts, ‘That I will break his yoke from your neck, And will burst your bonds; Foreigners shall no more enslave them. But they shall serve the LORD their God, And David their king, Whom I will raise up for them.

  • Hosea 3:5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days.

  • Ezekiel 34:23-24 I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I, the LORD, have spoken.

  • Ezekiel 37:24-25 David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them. Then they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob My servant, where your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell there, they, their children, and their children’s children, forever; and My servant David shall be their prince forever.

The King

The idea of calling the Messiah, “David” or “Son of David” comes from Yahuah's promise to King David that his lineage and throne will stand forever. We're going to look at 2 Samuel then some passages that we're not as familiar with to see that this covenant with David is a confirmation of the prophecy that was already spoken over the tribe of Judah.

  • Genesis 49:10-11 LXX (Jacob's blessing to Judah). A ruler will not cease from Judah, and one who leads from his thighs, until the things laid away for him come, and he is the expectation of the nations. Binding his foal to a vine and the foal of his donkey to the branch, he will wash his garment in wine, and his cloak in the blood of grapes. (Zech. 9:9, Rev. 14:20 & 19:13)

  • 2 Samuel 7:12-14 When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son.

  • Jeremiah 33:17 For thus says the LORD: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel’

  • Psalm 2:6-9 “Yet I have set My King On My holy mountain of Zion. I will inscribe for a law: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’

  • Revelation 19:15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

  • Psalm 45:6-7 (read all) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

There is a consistent use of the terms ‘rod’ and ‘scepter’ which can be used as idioms for absolute righteousness. They represent the hard line between right and wrong, just and unjust, clean and unclean. The Messiah is a rod of righteousness because as King and High Priest, He makes these distinctions and executes them perfectly. The Hebrew word for rod is ‘matte’ which means staff, branch, tribe, or branch of a vine. All descriptions point to the Messiah being the Branch of the tribe of Judah who will rule the throne of David and restore the tribes of Jacob.

  • Micah 6:9 The voice of the LORD cries to the city and let sound wisdom see Your name! ‘Hear the Rod and Him who appointed it!’

  • Isaiah 11:1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, (David is the stem of Jesse his father) And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

  • Revelation 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.

Let's look at a few of the many connections to a passage found in the Testament of Judah:

  • Testament of Judah 24:1-6 And after these things shall a star arise to you from Jacob in peace, And a man shall arise from my seed, like the sun of righteousness, walking with the sons of men in meekness and righteousness; And no sin shall be found in him. And the heavens shall be open unto him, To pour out the spirit, (even) the blessing of the Holy Father; And He shall pour out the spirit of grace upon you; And ye shall be unto Him sons in truth, And ye shall walk in His commandments first and last. Then shall the scepter of my kingdom shine forth; And from your root shall arise a stem; And from it shall grow a rod of righteousness to the Gentiles, to judge and to save all that call upon the Lord.

  • Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  • Malachi 4:2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.

  • Acts 2:23 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

  • Isaiah 53:9 And they made His grave with the wicked. But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

  • 1 Peter 2:22 Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth.

The Cornerstone

The epistle of 1 Peter is FULL of descriptions of fulfilled prophecy. It provides a great, simple explanation of the job that YHWH appointed and anointed His Son to do. Unfortunately, not all would accept this and the Son would become a stumbling block…

  • Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the LORD GOD: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. (1 Peter 2:6)

  • Psalm 118:22-23 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. (1 Peter 2:7)

  • Isaiah 8:13-14 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (1 Peter 2:8)

The Word

It was part of YHWH’s plan for His Son to be the vessel of His will; to test, gather, and redeem both Israel and Judah. We will look at the expression YHWH uses to call Him “My Servant” in just a little bit; a servant does the will of the one who appoints the job that is to be accomplished.

First, let’s take a look at the verse I know everyone is shouting right now! We have to define words and look at the context as well as how the terms have already been described.

  • John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God

‘With’ automatically implies that there are more than one persons and it is used twice. So, there is someone who was WITH God, but also IS God. How can this be? It’s pretty simple if we define the word ‘God’: Theos in Greek/ Elohim in Hebrew- The Almighty, divine beings such as angels, divine beings such as demons, or humans in a seat of judgment. YHWH tells Moses that he will be a ‘god’ before Pharaoh in Exodus 7:1. Messiah replies to the Pharisees, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’ in John 10:34. This was a quote from Psalm 82 “‘God stands in the congregation of the mighty; He judges among the gods. . .I said, “You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High.”’ This passage of scripture is describing the men that YHWH appointed to be judges among the people who are mortal and will die, this is why it is necessary for another to rise up to be judge/god forever.

Saying ‘Jesus is God’ is 100% accurate, but that does not mean He IS the Almighty Father. And it does not redefine the word ‘god’ to mean “a shared essence of godhead.” The Son was a divine being who was hidden away with the Father until the appointed time when He would empty His divine nature to be born of flesh. He lived fully man, suffered as a human, died as a human, and resurrected as a perfected human to take up a seat of judgment. He did not resurrect because He was divine! All of humanity that adheres to the covenant is promised resurrection to eternal life! He earned the first fruits of the resurrection because of His obedience and complete righteousness. This is what makes Him so much greater than any other human, and worthy of praise and honor.

  • Philippians 2:6-8 Who, existing in the form of God [a divine nature], did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

  • Hebrews 5:7-8 In the days of His humanity, He offered up both prayers and pleas with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His devout behavior. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. . . But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

The Concealed One

  • Isaiah 49:2 And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, And made Me a polished shaft; In His quiver He has hidden Me.

  • Isaiah 30:20 Though the LORD gave you bread of adversity and water of affliction, your Teacher shall no longer be hidden. But your eyes shall see your Teacher.

  • John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

  • Enoch 48:2-5  In that hour was this Son of man invoked before the Lord of spirits, and his name in the presence of the Ancient of days. Before the sun and the signs were created, before the stars of heaven were formed, his name was invoked in the presence of the Lord of spirits. A support shall he be for the righteous and the holy to lean upon, without falling; and he shall be the light of nations. He shall be the hope of those whose hearts are troubled. All, who dwell on earth, shall fall down and worship before him; shall bless and glorify him, and sing praises to the name of the Lord of spirits. Therefore the Elect and the Concealed One existed in his presence, before the world was created, and forever.

  • Enoch 60:9-13  And trouble shall seize them, when they shall behold this Son of woman sitting upon the throne of his glory. Then shall the kings, the princes, and all who possess the earth, glorify him who has dominion over all things, him who was concealed; for from the beginning the Son of man existed in secret, whom the Most High preserved in the presence of his power, and revealed to the elect. He shall sow the congregation of the saints, and of the elect; and all the elect shall stand before him in that day. All the kings, the princes, the exalted, and those who rule over the earth, shall fall down on their faces before him, and shall worship him. They shall fix their hopes on this Son of man, shall pray to him, and petition him for mercy.

All of this is consistent with what we see Colossians 1 describe.

Colossians 1:12 …giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.  For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross .. . . to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

The Image of God

The Son is the image of the Almighty Father in the same way we are “being transformed into the same image from glory to glory” (2 Cor. 2:18) and those “whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son” (Rom. 8:29). ‘Image’ is used as an adjective to describe the likeness or representation of the Messiah. The Anointed One is the representative of His Father, just as we are to representatives of the Anointed One.

This same logic is what we can and should apply to John 10:30 when He says “I and the Father are one.” This statement is made in conclusion to an entire description of the job and authority that the Father gave to Him. The Father appointed Him to gather the sheep of Israel.

  • John 10:14-16 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

  • Ezekiel 34:23 I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed themMy servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.

  • Micah 5:4 And He shall stand and feed His flock In the strength of the LORD, In the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; And they shall abide, For now He shall be great To the ends of the earth

  • 1 Peter 2:25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

  • John 10:25-30 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.

He did the Father's works as a righteous representative of the Father. They are one because they are in agreement not because they share an essence of being; the Son is dedicated to the will of the Father. Being ‘one’ is a common theme throughout scripture- it is used to describe husband + wife becoming one flesh; Israel + Judah becoming one nation; and believers are to be one body in the faith.

  • Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

The Prophet

The New Testament descriptions of the Messiah and what He was sent to do are not new concepts! The NT is compiled testimonies of how Messiah fulfilled prophecies about His first coming, that were already spoken of in the OT. He also confirmed that the OT prophecies spoken about His second coming in the future, would still come to pass. The covenant promises were still in effect for ALL who believe, whether Jew or Gentile. The apostles’ writings explain how He is the man whom the prophets had spoken of as the designated Son of Elohim.

  • Romans 1:1-4 the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who came of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was designated Son of God with power, according to the Holy Spirit, by the resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ, our Lord.

(See above to review more scriptures about ‘David’)

  • Isaiah 9:6-7 LXX a child was born to us; a son was given to us whose leadership came upon His shoulders; and His name is called “Messenger of the Great Council,” for I will bring peace upon the rulers and health to him. His leadership is great and there is no boundary to His peace on the throne of David, and His kingdom, to establish and take hold of it by righteousness, from now to eternity. The eagerness of the LORD of the Sabbath will do these things.

  • Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the LORD of hosts.

  • Isaiah 42:1 Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. . . I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people As a light to the Gentiles, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.

  • Isaiah 49:6 ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’

During Jesus’ ministry, He confirmed who He was by His works, by fulfilling prophecy, and by the words He spoke. He made known that His purpose was to take the gospel of the Kingdom to the gentiles. To clarify- ‘gentile’ means out of covenant, this is why He says He didn’t come for the righteous (those who were already living in covenant), but the sick. During this time period, Israel had been scattered throughout the surrounding nations, they knew who the God of Israel was and they knew the prophecies of a coming Messiah. This is why the woman in Samaria spoke of worshipping YHWH and said, “I know that Messiah is coming.” According to Jewish law/ custom, the Samaritans and those in the surrounding country were not allowed to come worship in Jerusalem unless they converted to Judaism. Their concern was not with YHWH’s covenant but with their own religious dogmas. Jesus came to set the record straight, to be a light to the gentiles and bring back into covenant the lost sheep of Israel. This is what is spoken of in Ephesians 2:15, “having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace.” Creating ONE body from the two nations- scattered Israel and Judah, is exactly what He was prophesied to do. He confirmed this piece of the covenant by ministering to the Jews and the Gentiles, and He will bring it to fullness at His second coming.

  • Matthew 15:24  He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

  • Luke 4:43 He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”

  • Ezekiel 37:21-22 Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land;  and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king over them all; they shall no longer be two nations, nor shall they ever be divided into two kingdoms again.

  • Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

The Messiah

This scripture above is a great example of prophecy that He fulfilled at His first coming… let's look at a few more examples.

  • Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

  • Isaiah 35:5-6 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert

  • Psalm 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

  • Psalm 22 (all) My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? . . . The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.

  • Psalm 16:10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

I want to address a scripture that is commonly used to deny the Messiah as a separate person from the Father…

  • Isaiah 45:5-6 I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting That there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.

The context of this passage is warning not to worship false gods! It is the same scenario 3 chapters earlier when He specifies that He will not share His glory with IDOLS.

  • Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

YHWH did not appoint His Son to be worshipped as a “god,” as the nations would worship false gods. He appointed and anointed His Son to be a ruler over the people (one of the definitions of god) and to be a High Priest.

Look at the first 7 verses of Isaiah 42 that explains the concept of His Son. This is the ONE He called, there is no other god. Isaiah 50-45 repeats the concept of YHWH being the Redeemer, the Saviour, the only Almighty God. But within these descriptions He speaks of how He will use King Cyrus to execute His will. This is exactly what He prophecies of His own son, that He will be the vessel through which His redemption and salvation will be executed to the ends of the earth. No other god is to be worshipped, He, YHWH is the ONLY one.

People ask, “why then did Jesus accept worship,” and for that we'll use King David as an example. There is a definitive difference in worship and praise: offering sacrifices and temple service, and praise: anointing and reverence. We never, ever see any reference to the Son of God accepting sacrifices. We do see people bow down before Him and anoint Him just as people would to serve a revered king.

  • 1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.

  • 2 Samuel 5:2-3 the LORD said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.’ Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel.

  • 2 Samuel 5:12 So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

If David, a man with sin and blood on his hands was highly spoken of by YHWH and the people, how much more reverence do you think ought to be poured out upon the sinless Son of God who intercedes on our behalf. He accepted the praise because He knew it was all to the glory of the Father, but He never accepted or suggested sacrifice to be made in His name.

Ezekiel 40-48 explains the coming Kingdom as corroborated by Revelation, Isaiah, and Messiah's own descriptions. In chapters 43-45 we get the true narrative of how the Messiah operates in the Father's temple as the High Priest/ Prince. This is often controversial because nobody wants to accept the fact that sacrifices will be happening in the millennial Kingdom but the fact of the matter is, it's what the scriptures describe. Even Zechariah 14 explains how the nations will come up to Zion to bring sacrifices and offerings as the keep the festivals and appointed times. (Sacrifices are not bad things, they are covenant meals with the Father, prepared by an ordained cook- the priest).

  • Ezekiel 45:16-17 All the people of the land shall give this offering for the prince in Israel. Then it shall be the prince’s part to give burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, at the feasts, the New Moons, the Sabbaths, and at all the appointed seasons of the house of Israel. He shall prepare the sin offering, the grain offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offerings to make atonement for the house of Israel.

The High Priest

The whole of Isaiah 53 notions to what He accomplishes as a prophet and a priest, phrases such as: “borne our sickness and carried our pains,” “for the transgression of my people,” “made Himself a guilt offering,” “bears their crookedness,” “He bore the sin,” “made intercession”

These are the exact same phrases we see used to describe the priesthood making offering, intercession, and covering for Israel. The difference, as Hebrews describes, is that #1 they had sin they had to atone for first, and #2 that they all died. Messiah had no sin, He was completely righteous and gave His life in order to take it up again so that He could assume His prophesied position as High Priest, atoning for Israel in order that they be saved to eternal life.

  • Isaiah 53:11-12 By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, He was numbered with the transgressors, He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

  • John 10:18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.

  • Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

  • Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

It was not the death of the Messiah that saves us, but rather His resurrected life and the position He fulfills with His life. Hebrews 7-10 deeply explains how His priesthood is greater than the earthly levitical priesthood, namely that He had no sin. His righteous and perfect blood is the most impactful expression of just how obedient He was to the Father while He was in the flesh. The various expressions about the “blood of Jesus” throughout the New Testament are idioms for this definitive understanding. His perfect life in the flesh- obedient unto death- created the Way for us to be reconciled before YHWH. His resurrected life as a High Priest provides the atonement necessary for us to await the resurrection and not perish in sheol.

**YHWH never, ever proclaims to be His own high priest. He established and ordained a specific system to be the instrument in which His will is executed. And He anointed His Son to be the head of that system.

*For more study on this, refer back to the prophecies of Messiah’s priesthood above and define what the duties of a priest look like in Leviticus and Malachi.

As we close, let's take look back at Psalm 110. In the LXX this passage is chapter 109 and it reads a little differently.

  • Psalm 109:1-4 LXX The LORD said to my Lord, “Be seated at my right side until I set your enemies as a footstool for your feet.” The LORD will send out a rod of power from Zion, “Rule in the middle of Your enemies. With you is authority in the day of your power, with the splendor of the holy ones. From the womb, before the morning, I fathered You.” The LORD swore and will not regret, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

This older translation gives a very clear and obvious description of a Father giving His Son a position of authority. Yahusha/Jesus says, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Matthew 28:18 If you look back at the 1 Corinthians 15 verse we touched on earlier, you'll see the Son give authority back to the Father at the end of the thousand year reign when the final enemy, death, is defeated *(Revelation 20:14). Let's take a look at few verses in Revelation that connect some more dots.

  • Revelation 3:21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

  • Revelation 3:12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

  • Revelation 3:5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

  • Revelation 2:26-27 And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will ‘give power over the nations,’ (Pslam 2:8) He shall rule them ‘with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’ (Psalm 2:9) as I also have received from My Father.

  • Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must [a]shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John.

The Son has a Father; the Son has a God. When Mary found Yahusha/Jesus after His resurrection, he said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.” John 20:17.

  • Testament of Levi 18:6-9 The heavens shall be opened, And From the temple of glory shall come upon him sanctification, With the Father's voice as from Abraham to Isaac. And the glory of the Most High shall be uttered over him, And the spirit of understanding and sanctification shall rest upon him. For he shall give the majesty of the Lord to His sons in truth for evermore; And there shall none succeed him for all generations forever. And in his priesthood the Gentiles shall be multiplied in knowledge upon the earth, And enlightened through the grace of the Lord: In his priesthood shall sin come to an end, And the lawless shall cease to do evil. And the just shall rest in him.
